When a full moon rises

Why It Matters

The One Wedding Light You Can't Book

A full moon wedding gives you something no florist or lighting crew can provide: a bright moon rising during your ceremony. Traditionally the full moon stands for completion and illumination, the point where everything you’ve built comes into the open. That’s why it’s the most popular lunar phase for weddings (see what every moon phase means).

There’s a practical reason too. A full moon rises at about the same time the sun sets. Plan your vows for that moment and you get warm golden-hour light on your faces and a full moon climbing behind you. In the Mojave, 50 miles from the Strip’s lights, the effect is hard to beat.

This page lists every full moon in 2027 and 2028 in Pacific Time, along with the weekday, the traditional moon name, and that evening’s Las Vegas sunset and moonrise. All the times were calculated for Las Vegas, so you can plan your ceremony to the minute.

Supermoons, defined

A supermoon is a full moon near its closest point to Earth, so it looks slightly larger and brighter. By the common definition (within roughly 362,000 km), the supermoons in this window are January 22, 2027; January 11, 2028; February 10, 2028; and March 10, 2028. A fifth falls just before the window, on December 23, 2026.

Ceremony Timing

How to Plan a Moonrise Ceremony in the Desert

1

Pick the evening, not just the date

If the exact full moon falls between midnight and dawn, the evening before is usually better. The moon rises closer to sunset, and it's 99%+ lit either way. That's why this guide often points to a Friday or Saturday that isn't the 'official' full moon date.

2

Set the ceremony 20–30 minutes before sunset

Starting before sunset gives you golden-hour light for the vows and the moon coming up as you finish. Desert ceremonies run about 15–20 minutes, so the timing works out naturally.

3

Allow for the horizon

These moonrise times assume a flat horizon in Las Vegas. Behind the red rock at Valley of Fire or the canyon walls at Nelson Ghost Town, the moon shows up a few minutes later. Out on the open, flat Eldorado dry lakebed you see it the moment it rises.

4

Keep photography going after the vows

The best moon shots usually come 10–20 minutes after moonrise, when the moon is just above the horizon and the sky is a deep blue. Plan portraits for after the ceremony, not before.

5

Check the season, too

A full moon doesn't cancel out June heat or a windy March afternoon. Compare your shortlist with our desert wedding season guide and, if astrology matters to you, the 2027 Mercury retrograde windows.

Common Questions

Full Moon Wedding FAQ

When are the full moons in 2027?
In Pacific Time, the 2027 full moons fall on January 22, February 20, March 22, April 20, May 20, June 18, July 18, August 17, September 15, October 15, November 13, and December 13. The weekend ones are Friday, January 22; Saturday, February 20; Friday, June 18; Sunday, July 18; Friday, October 15; and Saturday, November 13.
When are the full moons in 2028?
In Pacific Time, the 2028 full moons fall on January 11, February 10, March 10, April 9, May 8, June 6, July 6, August 5, September 3, October 3, November 2, December 1, and December 31. Because December has two, the New Year's Eve full moon on December 31, 2028 is a Blue Moon in U.S. time zones.
Is a full moon a good day to get married?
Traditionally, yes. The full moon is the most popular lunar phase for weddings because it stands for completion, illumination, and things coming to fruition. It's also practical: a full moon rises at about sunset, so it adds a second light source to evening ceremony photos and lights the walk back after dark.
What time does the full moon rise in Las Vegas?
A full moon rises within about an hour of sunset. On some dates, like Saturday, February 20, 2027 (sunset 5:26 PM, moonrise 5:30 PM), the two happen almost together. Moonrise times on this page are for a flat horizon in Las Vegas. At a venue surrounded by rock walls or mountains, the moon appears a little later, once it clears the ridgeline.
Does the moon need to be exactly full on my wedding day?
No. The moon looks full to the eye for about a day on either side of the exact full moon, and it stays above 99% lit. If the exact full moon falls in the early morning, the evening before is often the better choice. It rises closer to sunset, and it may be a weekend night. For example, the April 9, 2028 full moon peaks at 3:27 AM, so Saturday, April 8 is the evening to book.
Are there any lunar eclipses on wedding dates in 2027 or 2028?
Six lunar eclipses happen in 2027–2028, but only one is visible from Las Vegas in the evening: a very slight partial eclipse on Tuesday, January 11, 2028, from about 7:44 to 8:42 PM, when only a sliver of the moon darkens. The total lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028 takes place after the moon has set in Las Vegas, so it won't affect a New Year's Eve ceremony.
Can we have a full moon wedding at a Las Vegas desert venue?
Yes. Our desert venues sit well away from the Strip's light pollution, which makes a rising full moon look bigger and brighter. We time the ceremony to that evening's sunset and moonrise so you get golden-hour light for photos and the moon coming up behind you, all within the venue's access hours.
